Jazz, c’est le titre d’un livre publié par Matisse en 1947. C’est aussi l’improvisation, les clubs obscurs et enfumés, la mixité, la vitalité, l’émergence d’un nouveau genre.Comment créer un nouveau discours à partir des standards de l’histoire de l’art? Ingo Gerken a choisi de questionner la complexité de l’art contemporain en s’appuyant sur le contexte historique de l’art. Son travail repose sur les systèmes de reproduction et de représentation. Il utilise les revues d’art, les affiches d’exposition, les cartes postales achetées dans les boutiques des musées pour s’approprier les grands classiques et bouleverser leur sens originel. Par un geste simple et minimaliste, le découpage, la photographie, Ingo Gerken parvient à activer les contextes de l’histoire de l’art et les transformer en des combinaisons sculpturales. Il scrute, dans cette zone de conflit entre pertinence, situation et subversion, la perméabilité entre espace réel et imaginaire. Dans la série Cityworks, Ingo Gerken agit directement sur l’image. Les deux perspectives, image et contexte urbain environnant, convergent de manière ambiguë et arrivent à se fondre l’une avec l’autre. Un nouvel espace subversif est alors ouvert où l’image et l’espace urbain semblent perforés. En connectant les deux espaces, Ingo Gerken parvient à atteindre plusieurs lignes de limites, entre modèle-type et monumental, action et sculpture, photographie et peinture, le quotidien et l’histoire de l’art, la perception publique et privée. Ce procédé artistique est en lui-même fragile et fugace, il n’existe que momentanément, mais peut changer indéfiniment.Ingo Gerken présentera dans un premier espace une série de photographies; le deuxième espace sera consacré à une installation in situ relevant du jeu de miroir et de la narrativité dans un style minimaliste.

This is also improvisation, dark and smoky places, mixity, vitality, the birth of a new genre.The work of Ingo Gerken (installation, photography, collage) is conceptually and formally focussed on the artcontext. It deals with its products, standards and values in order to create new assesment and approach. He uses artmagazines, exhibition posters and museums postcards to enter, release and enlarge artspecific discourse and discussion, and to turn contents and meanings into another level of reality. The work of Ingo Gerken deals with the structures of reproduction and representation and ranges between the interfaces of dematerialization and site-specific reification. His work activates art historical contexts and transforms them into spatial-sculptural combinations. Through the area of conflict between relevance, situation and subversion, Gerken scrutinizes the permeability of imaginary and real spaces: their construction, flexibility and weight. Cityworks is a series of photographs, which have been created by direct intervention with the picture. These perspective steps, drawn from the urban surroundings and existing structures, momentarily converge then ambiguously melt into each other. A subversive new space is opened (within the artists reach) where the photographic and urban surface appear perforated. By logging into the perspective space Gerken touches a variety of borders between the model-like and the monumental, action and sculpture, photography and painting, the every day and the history of art, private view and public space. The artistic process is itself documented as a fleeting and fragile construct, that exists for a brief moment, yet can be proportionally shifted.
